Road trip: Leaving your mark
October 22nd, 2007

Sometimes I wonder if messages from the past are so different from this one. As citizens of the future, we usually ascribe deep spiritual significance to ancient petroglyphs, but what if it was just some kid defacing a rock?
What is the author of this message trying to say?
I exist. Pay attention.
How do you leave your mark on the world?

I’ve pondered the same thing. Aren’t petroglyphs really graffiti? It makes me gag when interpreters attach such significance to ancient drawings. Why was it OK to deface rocks then, but not now? In “appropriate” places I love graffiti. The art is much more beautiful than most billboards. And certainly grabs attention!
